Chapter Sixteen

I was sitting in the teacher's lounge after school had let out and the kids had all headed off on the busses, looking over my lesson plans for the next couple of weeks to make sure that I didn't need to make any changes. I heard a knock and looked up as the assistant principal stuck his head around the corner. "Callie?" he called out.

"Here," I answered, smiling a little at the classroom joke.

The assistant principal didn't smile. I'd worked with him for a few years, but had never quite figured out what his last name was. It was something very similar to Kastanopolis. Kaspanopoulos? Some strange, twisted Greek name that started with a K. Even the kids just called him Mister K.

"There's someone here to see you," he said, and then just stood there and looked at me.

I looked right back at him. Mister K had some issues with social skills, I suspected, but it fortunately didn't seem to interfere with his ability to keep the school running and out of debt. "Who is it?" I asked after several seconds ticked by in silence.

He shrugged. "Dunno. He asked for you, though, so I sent him to your room."

Frowning, I stood up and headed for my room. I'd scarcely made it halfway down the hallway, however, before Suzy Sullivan came bustling up to me, her green eyes wide beneath the birds-nest tangle of red hair on top of her head.

"Oh my god, Callie!" she gasped out in a stage whisper that easily carried through the entire hallway. "There's a BOY in your room!"

"Yes, Mr. K told me," I said, frowning a little at Suzy. "What do you mean, a boy? He said that it was a man-"

"No, like, a real boy!" Suzy said, tracing some sort of strangely wavy shape in the air with her hands and confusing me further.

"Give me an age range," I requested.

She sighed, rolling those big green eyes around in her head like marbles. "He's super CUTE!" she hissed, as if bothered that she needed to spell such an obvious message out to me. "Are you dating someone? Because if so, you need to tell me where you found him, so I can get one of my own!"

"No, I'm not dating anyone," I said, peering past her at the ajar door to my classroom. Who could be here to see me? Someone who knew my name, knew where I worked, someone really hot and sexy-

Oh no.

I shouldered my way past Suzy, ignoring her little cheer of "get it, gurl!". Hurrying the rest of the way down to my classroom, I pushed the door the rest of the way open – and froze as I saw who stood inside. My fears were confirmed.

Teddy stood in front of my desk, leaning back casually against it. He smiled as he saw me enter, raising a bouquet of roses in his hands.

"Teddy," I exclaimed, and then stopped, because I ran out of words. I didn't understand what he was doing here.
